The Growing City

The work was created in 2024 as part of the exhibition project NEW ECOLOGIES, organized on the occasion of Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture.

The display case contains a 3D model of the city of Chemnitz made of mixed substrate. A living fungus mycelium is growing on it. Due to the fiber-degrading properties of the fungal mycelium, the textile waste in the substrate is slowly broken down — a deliberate reference to Chemnitz’s history as a former center of the textile industry. Increasingly overgrown by the mycelium, a completely different and organic image of the city, its ruins, and its waste emerges.
